What you need

  • Basic JavaScript: variables, functions, arrays and objects. We share a primer before week 1 if you need it
  • A laptop with at least 8GB of RAM. A Mac is not required: iPhone builds run in the cloud
  • An Android phone or an iPhone for testing
  • Reliable internet and data
  • To publish to the store test tracks you need a Google Play Console account (one-off registration fee) and an Apple Developer Program membership (annual fee), paid directly by you and not included. Without them you still build and test the whole app: an installable APK or EAS internal build on Android, and Expo Go on iPhone
What you’ll do

Week by week

  1. Weeks 1–2

    Set up and build your first screens

    • Install Expo and run a React Native app on your own phone in the first session
    • Write components in TypeScript and lay out screens with Flexbox
    • Navigate between screens with Expo Router, including tabs and stacks
  2. Weeks 3–4

    Design for real users on real phones

    • Turn a Figma wireframe into screens that work on small and large phones
    • Build forms with validation, loading states and friendly error messages
    • Test your app for accessibility: tap target sizes, contrast and screen readers
  3. Weeks 5–6

    Connect data and work offline

    • Connect the app to a backend (Supabase) for sign-up, login and data
    • Store data on the device so the app keeps working when the network drops
    • Sync changes back to the server when the connection returns
  4. Weeks 7–8

    Add payments and notifications

    • Integrate a Paystack checkout, and verify payments on the server, not the phone
    • Send push notifications for order updates and reminders (on iPhone this needs the Apple Developer Program membership)
    • Handle camera, location or file uploads where your app needs them
  5. Weeks 9–10

    Test and harden

    • Write unit and component tests for the parts that handle money and data
    • Debug crashes with logs and error reporting
    • Keep API keys and secrets off the device and out of your repository
  6. Weeks 11–12

    Ship to both stores

    • Build Android and iPhone binaries with EAS Build
    • Publish to Google Play internal testing and Apple TestFlight if you have the two store accounts
    • Share an installable Android APK or EAS internal build, and an Expo Go link for iPhone, if you do not
    • Write store listings, screenshots and a privacy statement
    • Present your capstone app for a practitioner review

Mobile App Dev (Cross-Platform): your questions answered

Both are good. We teach React Native with Expo because it uses JavaScript and TypeScript, the same language as most web work, so one skill covers web and mobile. It is also well supported by AI coding assistants. The concepts you learn, such as state, offline sync and payments, carry over to Flutter.
No. You build iPhone versions in the cloud with EAS Build. Without an Apple Developer Program membership you test on a real iPhone with Expo Go; with one, you install your own build through TestFlight. A Mac helps for the iPhone simulator but is not required.
Publishing to the test tracks, Google Play internal testing and Apple TestFlight, needs both a Google Play Console account (one-off registration fee) and an Apple Developer Program membership (annual fee). Both are paid directly by you to Google and Apple and are not included in the course fee. If you do not have them, you still finish the course: you share an installable APK or EAS internal build on Android and an Expo Go link on iPhone. A full public release uses the same accounts, and store review times are set by Apple and Google.
Basic JavaScript. If you can write a function and loop through an array, you are ready. If not, ask for the primer when you WhatsApp ACADEMY and complete it before week 1.
