Is this course for you?
- IT support officers and system administrators who want to move from fixing to preventing
- Career pivoters with some IT support or networking experience
- Developers who run their own servers or cloud apps
- You already work in operations and want AI in your monitoring and incident workflow
What you need
- A laptop with at least 8GB of RAM that can run Docker
- Basic IT knowledge: what a server, IP address, DNS and a log file are
- Some comfort with the command line helps. We cover the Linux basics you need in week 1
- Reliable internet and data. Practice labs run in sandboxes, so mistakes cost nothing
Week by week
- Week 1
Map what you are keeping alive
- Map a small business IT estate: websites, email, servers, cloud apps and who depends on each
- Set up a Linux lab server with Docker in a sandbox
- Write service-level objectives for three business-critical services
- Week 2
Collect metrics and logs
- Collect metrics with Prometheus and node exporters
- Gather logs with Grafana Loki and instrument an app with OpenTelemetry
- Monitor uptime and SSL expiry for websites with Uptime Kuma
- Week 3
Build dashboards and alerts that matter
- Build Grafana dashboards around your service-level objectives, not every metric
- Route alerts with Alertmanager to email, Slack or another team chat channel
- Tune alert thresholds to cut noise, then measure how many alerts were actionable
- Week 4
Detect anomalies early
- Apply anomaly detection to CPU, disk, traffic and error-rate trends
- Forecast when a disk or quota will fill up, and raise a ticket before it does
- Compare rule-based alerts with machine-learning detection on the same data
- Week 5
Investigate incidents with AI
- Use an AI assistant to summarise logs and suggest likely causes, then verify each one
- Correlate related alerts into one incident so the on-call person sees the real problem
- Write a blameless post-incident review with timeline, cause and fixes
- Week 6
Automate the first response
- Write runbooks for the ten most common incidents
- Automate safe first steps, such as restarting a service or clearing a cache, with human approval for the rest
- Weeks 7–8
Secure, report and ship the capstone
- Keep monitoring data and AI prompts free of passwords and personal data
- Produce a monthly reliability report a non-technical manager understands
- Present your capstone monitoring stack and incident review for a practitioner review
What you walk away with
A working monitoring stack for a small-business web and server estate, with Grafana dashboards, uptime checks and tuned alerts
An incident case study: a simulated outage investigated with AI-assisted log analysis, with a post-incident review and runbook
A monthly reliability report template for a managed IT client, showing uptime against target and the actions taken
The tools you’ll use
- Linux and Docker
- Prometheus and Alertmanager
- Grafana and Grafana Loki
- OpenTelemetry
- Uptime Kuma
- Netdata (built-in anomaly detection)
- Python for simple forecasting
- ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for log summaries and runbook drafts
How AI fits your workflow
You use AI in three places: machine-learning anomaly detection to spot unusual behaviour before it becomes an outage, alert correlation to cut noise, and AI assistants to summarise logs and draft runbooks during an incident. You treat every AI suggestion as a lead to verify, not an answer, and you keep a human decision on any fix that touches production.
Career routes
- IT support or operations officer with monitoring responsibility
- Junior site reliability, DevOps or cloud operations engineer
- Managed IT support provider offering monitoring and monthly reliability reports
- Existing IT staff: the person who stops the same outage happening twice
