Nigeria’s Boldswitch Unveils FacePay: A Face-Based Payment Revolution

Forget account numbers and payment cards—Nigeria’s fintech scene is taking a bold leap into the future with FacePay.

What if sending money was as effortless as looking at someone? That’s exactly what Boldswitch, a Nigerian fintech startup, is betting on with the launch of FacePay, an AI-powered payment system that allows users to transfer money by simply snapping a photo of the recipient’s face.
This move positions Nigeria at the forefront of biometric-driven financial technology, bridging innovation with everyday convenience.

How FacePay Works

The process is refreshingly simple. To send money, users just take a quick picture of the recipient. AI-powered facial recognition and liveness detection then kick in, verifying identity in real-time to prevent fraud, deepfakes, or spoofing attempts. Once confirmed, the transfer is instant—no need for account numbers, phone details, or debit cards.

“We wanted to make sending money as natural as greeting someone,” said Glad Akhison, Founder and CEO of Boldswitch. With this approach, tipping a waiter, paying a street vendor, or sending money to a friend becomes as easy as pointing your phone at them.

Security and Privacy First

FacePay isn’t just flashy tech—it’s built with robust safeguards. The platform uses bank-grade encryption, multi-layer biometric verification, and anti-spoofing protections. Importantly, biometric data is never stored or shared without explicit consent, aligning with international data protection and privacy standards.

New users register through a QR-code system, making onboarding fast and secure. This layered approach not only
ensures trust but also makes it harder for fraudsters to game the system.

Why This Matters for Africa and Beyond

Africa’s fintech sector has been booming, with mobile payments leading financial inclusion for millions. FacePay takes this evolution a step further by removing even the need for phone numbers or bank details, potentially making cashless transactions even more accessible for people and businesses.

The use cases are wide-ranging: instant payouts for gig workers, donations to charities, frictionless payments for street vendors, and even identity verification for events. In regions where traditional banking still leaves many underserved, such innovations could become game changers.

Boldswitch isn’t stopping in Nigeria. The company has already set up operations in the U.S., working on patent protections, regulatory approvals, and international expansion. If successful, FacePay could place Africa at the forefront of biometric fintech solutions.

Global Competition Heats Up

Boldswitch isn’t the only player eyeing face-based payments. U.S.-based CypherFace has developed a similar system that confirms user identity in real-time. Launched in 2024, it’s an early sign that biometric payments may soon become a competitive global trend.

For Boldswitch, being the first to introduce facial recognition payments in Africa gives them a pioneering edge—if they can scale responsibly and maintain trust.

The Future of Payments?

FacePay’s debut highlights how far fintech innovation has come in Africa. By blending everyday transactions with cutting-edge AI, Boldswitch is reimagining what it means to send and receive money. The big question now: will consumers embrace this frictionless—but deeply personal—form of payment?
