Purpose of the Role
The IT Manager owns the design, deployment, and day-to-day reliability of the server and infrastructure estate that powers Inventrium and its managed clients. This is a hands-on leadership role for an engineer who is exceptional at implementation — standing up servers, migrating workloads, hardening systems, and turning project plans into production-ready environments that simply work. The role combines deep technical execution (Linux/Windows servers, virtualisation, networking, backups, security) with the discipline to document, monitor, and continuously improve uptime across web hosting, email, cloud, and on-premise systems for businesses across Nigeria and West Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Server Administration: Provision, configure, patch, and maintain Linux and Windows servers (physical, virtual, and cloud) to agreed availability, performance, and security standards.
- Implementation & Deployment: Lead end-to-end implementation of new infrastructure — server builds, application stacks, migrations, and go-lives — converting solution designs into stable production environments with minimal downtime.
- Cloud & Virtualisation: Deploy and manage workloads across cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, or local providers) and virtualisation/containers (VMware, Proxmox, Docker), optimising for cost, performance, and resilience.
- Web, Email & Hosting Infrastructure: Administer web servers (Nginx/Apache), control panels (cPanel/Plesk), DNS, SSL, and business email systems (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, mail servers), ensuring reliable delivery and uptime for clients.
- Networking & Security: Configure firewalls, VPNs, and network services; apply hardening, access control, and patch management to protect systems in line with NDPA and client compliance requirements.
- Backup, Continuity & DR: Implement, test, and document backup and disaster-recovery procedures so client data and systems can be restored quickly and predictably.
- Monitoring & Reliability: Set up proactive monitoring and alerting; respond to incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and drive down recurring issues to improve uptime.
- Client Implementation Support: Work with the managed-services team to scope, plan, and deliver infrastructure projects for clients, providing clear runbooks, handover documentation, and training.
- Documentation & Standards: Maintain accurate infrastructure documentation, configuration baselines, and standard operating procedures so environments are reproducible and auditable.
- Vendor & Capacity Management: Manage hosting, data-centre, and software vendors; forecast capacity and recommend upgrades before they become bottlenecks.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 4+ years of hands-on experience administering and implementing Linux and/or Windows Server environments in production.
- Demonstrable track record of leading implementations and migrations — server builds, application deployments, and go-lives delivered with minimal downtime.
- Strong command of server fundamentals: networking (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPN), virtualisation, web servers, and email/hosting infrastructure.
- Practical cloud experience (AWS, Azure, or comparable) and comfort with infrastructure automation/scripting (Bash, PowerShell, or similar).
- Solid grasp of system security, hardening, patch management, backups, and disaster recovery.
- Excellent troubleshooting ability under pressure, with strong incident-management and root-cause-analysis discipline.
- Clear documentation habits and the communication skills to support clients and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant certifications such as RHCSA/RHCE, Microsoft Certified (Azure/Server), AWS, CompTIA Server+/Network+, or VMware VCP.
- Experience in a managed-services / IT outsourcing environment serving multiple clients.
- Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and with monitoring stacks (Zabbix, Prometheus/Grafana, or similar).
- Familiarity with control panels (cPanel/Plesk) and high-volume business email administration.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and setting infrastructure standards.
Performance Indicators
- Infrastructure and hosting uptime against agreed SLAs.
- On-time, on-spec delivery of implementation and migration projects.
- Mean time to detect and resolve infrastructure incidents.
- Backup success rate and successful disaster-recovery test results.
- Patch and security-compliance coverage across the server estate.
Core Competencies
- Hands-on implementation excellence and bias for getting systems live and stable.
- Ownership and accountability for uptime and reliability.
- Methodical troubleshooting and calm incident management.
- Strong documentation and standards orientation.
- Collaboration with delivery teams and clear client communication.
